What is a ‘bracket’ pitcher in fastpitch softball select leagues?
What does the term ‘bracket’ mean? I know that fastpitch girls softball teams play ‘bracket’ tournaments, and ‘pool’ tournaments, but what is the difference?
Bracket doesn’t refer to the pitcher. In a double-elimination bracket-play tournament, all teams are set up to play a first game in the winners bracket. If they win, they stay in the winners bracket but if they lose, they play in the the losers bracket. In the winners bracket (after the first game) they will always play teams that have also won all their games so far. When in the losers bracket, games will be played against a team that lost their previous game. Lose a game in the losers bracket and your team is done. Games are continued in the two brackets until there’s only one team in each bracket. In a double elim. tourney, the winner of the losers bracket usually plays the winner of the winners bracket. The winner of this game is the champ.
In a pool tourney, all teams in the pool play each other. After all games are played in the pool, each team has a record, say 2-3 if they won two and lost three in a six team pool. When there are many teams, the pool play record often determines the seating of the teams when they then start playing in a bracket-play tourney. So, you can come out last in the pool play and work your way back to win it all if you succeed in the subsequent bracket play.
This is simplified but hope it makes a bit more sense. If you want to see a similar bracket, check out the NCAA basketball tournament’s March Madness bracket that seats 64 teams against one another, one at a time until there’s only one left. There’s no losers bracket though since if they lose once, they’re gone. Check out http://www.madduxsports.com/2006bracket2.pdf for an example.
